Graduate Records Exam (GRE) General Test

Description:

The Graduate Records Exam (GRE) is a test used for graduate study admissions by colleges and universities. The GRE General Test measures critical thinking, analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study.

Format and Delivery:

The GRE "General Test" is offered at USF's Testing Center as a computer-based exam. The exam consists of three parts--analytical writing, verbal and quantitative--and examinees are allotted four hours to complete the examination.

Type:

Graduate Admissions

Registration Process:

To register for the GRE, please go to the registration link shown to the right. This will connect you with the ETS registration website. Under test taker, click on "Registration for a GRE test", follow "Register for the GRE Verbal Test" and click on "Register for the GRE computer-based General test". Select the USF Testing Center as your choice for testing location. ETS coordinates with USF Testing to register examinees for the computer based test. Registration is based on space availability. Please review the identification requirements on the GRE website.

Test and Fees:

Currently, ETS charges $150 for the GRE. There are no additional USF fees as ETS pays USF a fee for each person tested. ETS may impose a "no-show" fee. Additional fees will be assessed by ETS for stand-by, reviews, and/or additional scores. Please see the ETS website or General Bulletin for more information. There is a $50.00 fee to reschedule and this must be done three days in advance.

Retest Policies:

ETS allows examinees to retake the General Test only once per calendar month and no more than five times within a 12-month period.

Testing Schedule:

The GRE is offered Monday through Friday, from 8am-12pm and 12pm-4pm, as well as alternating Saturdays from 8am-12pm. Please visit www.gre.org or call 813-974-2741 to check availability of specific days and times. Seating for this exam is limited and offered on a first-come, first served basis. During periods of increased demand, your first-choice of testing date and time may not be available. Examinees should register as early as possible to avoid potential scheduling conflicts.
