Description:
FTCE/FELE examinations allow teachers to demonstrate mastery of basic skills, professional knowledge, and content area of specialization.
The FTCE General Knowledge Test (GK) consists of four subtests: Essay (50 minutes), English Language Skills (40 minutes), Reading (40 minutes), and Mathematics (100 minutes). NOTE: An examinee who took and passed all or part of the College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) in Florida before July 1, 2002, may use the parts passed on the CLAST toward certification. For any parts not passed by that date, corresponding subtests of the General Knowledge test are required.
The FTCE Subject Area Examinations (SAE) are given for many different subject areas, and vary in time based upon the individual test. The FTCE Professional Education Test PEd) is a test of pedagogy and professional practices and is 2 hours and 30 minutes long.
The FELE test is for certification of administrators such as school principals.
Format and Delivery:
All the FTCE/FELE exams can be taken by standard (paper and pencil) testing and computer-based testing (CBT), however USF does not have all the tests available at our location. To see the options, go to http://www.fl.nesinc.com/ and choose either standard or computer-based testing.

Registration Process:
Before beginning the registration process, you should review the official FTCE/FELE website, http://www.fl.nesinc.com/, in order to obtain all the information about the FTCE/FELE exams. On the website are instructions on how to register for paper and pencil tests, as well as computer-based tests. The test fees and testing locations are also listed on the web site.
Test and Fees:
The fee for the FTCE/FELE tests are dependent upon whether you are a first time or retake test candidate. The test fees are listed on the FTCE/FELE website. All payments must be made by credit card or electronic check.
Retest Policies:
No one may retake the same test or subtest less than 31 days after completing a test or subtest. For example, if you test on September 3rd, you must count to the 31st day (or October 4th), with the first day being September 4th, to determine the next valid exam day for the same test or subtest. If you retake the same test within 31 days, your second test score will be invalidated.
Which exams should I register to take?
When you apply to the Bureau of Education Certificaiton at the Florida Department of Education in Tallahassee, you will receive an Official Statement of Status of Eligibility, which will tell you exactly which requirements you must complete and which tests you must pass to become certified. Testing Schedule:
The FTCE/FELE computer-based tests are offered Monday through Friday and alternating Saturdays. Visit http://www.fl.nesinc.com to check availability of specific dates and times and to schedule an appointment. Seating for this exam is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. During periods of increased demand, your first-choice of testing date and time may not be available. Examinees should register as early as possible to avoid potential scheduling conflicts.
