Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the
backstage area, balcony and artwork in the Tampa Theatre. We will learn
about the history of this special theatre and be treated to an organ
recital. The theatre is a mixture of Italian Renaissance, Byzantine,
Mediterranean, Spanish, Greek Revival and English Tudor styles. Gleaming
marble floors and palazzo tile add touches of regal weight. Built more
than 80 years ago, it is listed on the National Register of Historic
Places. The theatre is regarded as one of the country’s best preserved
examples of grand movie palace architecture. Lunch on your own follows
the tour. A shuttle bus will be available for those traveling from the
USF area. Others will meet the tour at the theatre. December 8 − Plant Hall Tour and Victorian Christmas Stroll Learn about Tampa’s history in this guided tour
of Plant Hall at the University of Tampa. The tour will include a visit
to the Plant Museum for the Victorian Christmas Stroll. The museum is
decorated as it was in 1890 when it first opened as a hotel. Plant Hall,
the main academic and administrative building for the university, was
formerly known as the Tampa Bay Hotel. With its Moorish minarets
towering above the Tampa skyline, the building represented, and still
remains, a symbol of the city and its history. Local historians credit
its builder, railroad and shipping magnate Henry B. Plant, with the
transformation of Tampa from a sleepy fishing village to what would
become a vibrant city in the 21st century. Lunch on your own at the
Valencia Gardens Restaurant follows the tour. For more information, call 813-974-8036 or email ollivol@gmail.com OLLI-USF Lunch and Learn Series. Friday Lunch and Learn Schedule: October 3 − We Are the World: USF as Global Citizen USF is engaged with its
partners around the world in addressing key development challenges.
Particular attention is paid to how we raise awareness and understanding
among students so that they can participate as global citizens on issues
facing our interconnected world. Learn about these exciting programs
from Maria de los Angeles Crummett, PhD, Dean of International Affairs
at USF. Dr. Crummett is responsible for international programming at USF
with direct oversight of education abroad, international student and
scholar services, the Institute for the Study of Latin America and the
Caribbean, and the newly formed Confucius Institute with Nankai
University. October 10 − Equal Rights for Women Today The Equal Rights
Amendment (ERA) did not get the required 38 state ratifications by 1982,
so it is not codified in the U.S. Constitution – as are race, religion
and national origin. There is legal opinion that the ERA can pick up
where it left off because the 35 state ratifications achieved earlier
cannot be rescinded. Just three more states must ratify the amendment
for it to become part of the Constitution. The ERA is still viable,
based on the past precedent of an unrelated amendment being adopted
after waiting 203 years. Sandy Oestreich has bachelor's and
master's degrees from Adelphi University (NY) and is an EdD candidate at
Hofstra University (NY). She is a professor emerita from Adelphi
University and currently serves as vice mayor of North Redington Beach.
October 17 − Tales of the New Old Age in America: A Place Called Canterbury After his genteel and
very southern mother suffered a major stroke, Dudley Clendinen became a
regular at her retirement community – Canterbury Tower, on Tampa’s
Bayshore Drive. It was among the characters there (average age 86) that
he also realized there were stories that needed to be told. A Place
Called Canterbury: Tales of the New Old Age in America is the
result. It is a “real life soap opera,” as well as a warm, witty,
painful account of the challenges that face older people – and the
children who become responsible for them. Dudley Clendinen is a
former columnist for the St. Petersburg Times, and a national
reporter and editorialist for The New York Times. A native of
Tampa, Clendinen lives in Baltimore, MD. October 24 − The Creative Age Aging was once seen as
a time of decline and death or as a problem to be solved. Today, we
recognize aging as a normal process, a time for creative growth and
fulfillment. Creative expression is now considered both an essential
component of brain health and of a fulfilling life. Learn about
opportunities to commence, continue or change your creative explorations
and expressions. Barbara Kazanis, PhD, is a retired USF professor
with over 40 years of experience as an artist, art educator and
expressive arts consultant/therapist. October 31 − Campaign 2008: How the Changing Media Environment Has Impacted this Year’s Elections With newspaper
advertising revenue dropping and circulation declining, have television,
radio and the Internet filled the gap and expanded their coverage of
campaigns and elections? What impact do the high number of television
ads have on voters’ decisions? If newspapers no longer have the staffs
to cover every single political race, where can we find quality coverage
of elections? Rob Lorei is a co-founder of public radio station
WMNF 88.5 FM and the host of Florida this Week, carried Friday
nights on WEDU-TV. He is a 1977 graduate from Antioch College with a
bachelor's degree in journalism. November 7 − Sex after 60: The Joys and the Challenges As we grow older, what
physiological, personal and relational changes can we expect? What can
we do to enrich our sex lives? In the context of a society that holds
many contradictory attitudes about both sex and aging, this talk will
explore such topics as the impact of Viagra, keeping long-term
relationships vital and dealing with the challenges of creating new
relationships. Learn about the dynamics of human sexuality from Mark
Canfield, PhD, a retired community college sociology professor from
Maryland. In addition to teaching human sexuality for 25 years, he is a
pastoral counselor and family mediator. November 14 − Election 2008 Perspective Gain a clear
perspective of the 2008 elections from Susan A. MacManus, PhD,
the most quoted political commentator in Florida. Dr. MacManus has
appeared on every major broadcast and cable network in the country and
is among the top five most widely quoted political commentators in the
nation. She is distinguished professor (public administration and
political science), government and international affairs, USF. November 21 − The Age of Tolerance in Medieval Spain During the period of
800-1200 AD, the Moors invaded Southern Spain and established a
benevolent and tolerant rule, particularly in Cordova. They invited the
Jews, Christians and Muslims to coexist peacefully. However, these
groups did more than that; they learned from each other and adopted each
other’s customs, traditions and language. They even intermarried! The
result was the development of a unique culture that spread throughout
Europe. Joe Menasce is an experienced OLLI study group leader,
with varied interests in the international scene. His fascination with
this period is due in part to the fact that his ancestors came from
Spain before immigrating to Egypt. December 5 − Awaken the Writer Within It takes more than just
the writing to see your words in print. Learn about the basics of
writing in several genres and the complexities of the publishing maze.
Whether you are writing articles or books, there are cost-effective ways
to market and promote what you write. Charles Jacobs is a retired
editor and publisher of several major daily newspapers, former editor of
Focus magazine, a writing coach and published author of both
fiction and nonfiction books. His latest book, The Writer within You,
is a Best Books of 2007 honoree. Visit the web at www.usfseniors.org or call USF Continuing Education at 813-974-5848. |
